Volunteering with Age Concern Brighton Hove & Portslade
Age Concern is a voluntary organisation devoted to improving the quality of life of older people. We campaign to ensure that the needs and aspirations of all older people are met, working with other organisations to this end.
Some of our services only employ paid staff, but the majority rely on the commitment of volunteers. Our volunteers don’t have to be experts, though we can put existing skills and qualifications to very good use. Above all, we need our volunteers to be committed to safeguarding the interests and well being of those we are here to serve. All volunteers are given appropriate training and supervision and have the support and guidance of managers and colleagues. There is insurance cover and reasonable out-of-pocket expenses can be claimed.
We celebrate diversity and welcome people with a range of skills from all backgrounds. Our volunteers must be over 18, but apart from that can be of any age. We particularly welcome those who have retired or have been made redundant later in life.
If you join us, you will be expected to give a minimum of three hours per week - unless you are accepted within a bank of volunteers who undertake irregular voluntary work as required. In some areas of work (such as within the Information & Advice Service and Horizons) volunteers are expected to commit themselves to at least 6 months’ work and preferably longer. All volunteers must agree to accept ongoing training and to attend required supervision or team meetings.
We are committed to safety and are very aware that many of the people we serve are frail and potentially vulnerable. Therefore, if your application is accepted, it will be necessary for an application to be made for disclosure of any information held at the Criminal Records Bureau.
